I recently became interested in genealogy when my father passed away. Since then, I have been learning about my connections to the Coodin family and have uncovered many fascinating pieces of information. This has been so interesting to me because growing up, I was always told that my father had very little extended family. The only thing he told me was that he was “distantly” related to the Coodins.

My great grandfather, Raful was married to Chaia Bluma Nudelman and they had only one child, a daughter named Bessie (Passel) Coodin. She was my grandmother who was twelve years old when she arrived in Canada from Belilovka, Ukraine. My grandmother Bessie was not the biological child of Raful and Chaia Bluma Kudinsky. She was adopted by them before they emigrated to Canada. Although she loved Raful and Chaia Bluma as adoptive parents, she was always resentful of the fact that she was sent away from her biological family when she was a child. Interestingly, she never spoke of her biological family or the events leading to her adoption. She only once mentioned that her real surname was Ginsberg.

The stories of both my grandmother and grandfather’s relatives are very complicated and interwoven. In 1932, my grandmother Bessie married Pacey (Pesach) Tabachnick in Winnipeg. They had three sons. My father, Larry Tabachnick was their middle child. It is interesting to note that my grandfather, Pacey Tabachnick came to Canada himself as a young orphan in the 1920s. We know little about his family in the old country. He was also from Belilovka. Only recently did we discover by examining his marriage registration that his parents were named Harry Tabachnick and Rose Rabinovitch. He indicated on his immigration papers that he was the nephew of Beryl Kreger. Beryl happened to be married to Chaia (Chaykeh) Coodin who was the daughter of Herschel and Elka Coodin. Herschel and my great grandfather, Raful were brothers. Therefore, Chaia Coodin and my grandmother Bessie were cousins. My grandfather Pacey Tabachnick would have known the Coodin cousins in the old country since they were all from the same shtetl. They had mutual relatives.

What I have come to realize is that my grandfather Pacey Tabachnick who never mentioned any relatives was actually related to the Kreger family and in turn, the Coodin family through marriage to my grandmother Bessie Coodin. My grandmother Bessie actually had dozens of Coodin cousins which I am just now realizing. Growing up in Winnipeg there were no other Tabachnicks and we knew of no other relatives on my grandfather’s side since he came to Canada himself as an orphan. The most fascinating part of this whole story, however, is something I have only recently discovered.

The first Kudinsky siblings who came to Canada were Herschel, Miriam, Leib, Nesanel and Raful. There was one sister, Feiga who never came to Canada. Their parents who never emigrated to Canada were Isiah and Pinze Kudinsky. They would be my great, great grandparents. We have since found interesting information on Miriam Kudinsky’s death registration papers. It turns out her mother’s maiden name was Tabachnick. That means since my grandfather, Raful was Miriams’s sister, his mother was a Tabachnick. Therefore, being from Belilovka where my grandfather, Pacey Tabachnick was raised, it turns out he was actually related to the Coodin family himself! It is interesting that he married my grandmother Bessie Coodin, but because she was adopted into the Coodin family they weren’t blood relatives.

I have recently confirmed through DNA testing that even though my grandmother was adopted into the Coodin family and I am not the biological great granddaughter of Raful Kudinsky, I still share DNA with the Coodin clan. This is because Raful Kudinsky’s mother was Pinze Tabachnick and I am also a Tabachnick! So much for not knowing any Tabachnick relatives! Everyone in the entire Coodin family has Tabachnick DNA! Mindblowing!

Story by Bonnie Buchalter

My name is Bonnie Buchalter and I am the great granddaughter of Raful Kudinsky.
