It became an important way, a conduit to connect for the first time and perhaps for others to reconnect over the many years with our “flesh and blood” in a project. This project would bring our shared history, shared “lived experiences” of many vivid memories of many years ago, into the present and propel the “Coodin” family into the future for those who will follow us.

We find it somewhat paradoxical that at this time in our lives that we are trying to rekindle a shared spirit to create a family reunion.

We actually find it curious that as we are coming together to work on this project as cousins from places throughout North America, we may be mirroring a shared experience of our ancestors. They came to Canada, initially Winnipeg at a time of tremendous change and fear. Similar to the forced migration of our ancestors as immigrants and their experiences, we too are now living in a time of tremendous uncertainty, increasing volatility, forced ambiguity of what our lives may become, and most critically what our hopes and desires are for some future stability in this chaotic world.

At our lunch in Winnipeg, we talked, ate, and enjoyed the time together. It became clear and somewhat joyful that a gathering of our once very large “clan” would be timely, and perhaps an important event in our lives.

One of the goals would be to create the conditions for the next generations to be aware, proud of, and realize that they are connected to something much bigger than themselves. Perhaps even more important is that our ancestors made it possible for us to be living our lives in a much better situation than what they faced, living in Belilivka, Ukraine in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

We reflected on our ancestors, including our great grandfather and great grandmother Nesanel and Rachel, and our great grandfather’s 3 brothers Hershel, Raful, and Judah, and his two sisters of Miriam and Feiga.

Later in October 2020, we gathered together a number of 2nd and 3rd cousins who represented the branches of our large family at our first meeting via Zoom.

This was a gathering of all of us who were descendants from our shared Great Grandfather Nesanel and Great Grandmother Rachel. More directly, we were the cousins whose descendants were their children: Mania, Babel, Leib, Razel, (Grisga also known as Hershel or Harry), Shiva, Alex, Bessie, and Nellie.

So, we came together and formed this creation team. Ever since October, we have been meeting monthly and have agreed to create and implement an October 2021 Virtual Coodin Family reunion event.

Our goals are as follows:

To celebrate our shared history and shared “lived experiences”;

To express our appreciation for the courage of our ancestors;

To connect the web of descendants and share this with anyone who is connected to the Coodin “Clan”;

To “pass on” this information, and the stories that we collect about the “trials, tribulations and successes” of our ancestors, and

To identify and strengthen the “interconnectedness” of all of us as “Coodins”, and that we have something to cherish, to share and build our common history together.

Our major activities are:

Create a genealogical tree for all 8 branches (expanded to the all ancestors);

Create a Website;

Write an “Ancestral Home” story, inclusive of all ancestors located in Belilovka;

Collect and share our Family branch stories in Canada; and

Dream, plan and create a “Virtual” Reunion agenda for October 2021.

Our purpose of sharing this website is to encourage anyone whom has knowledge, stories, documents, and an interest in participating in this reunion, to contact us.

We need your help. We need wider participation of our Coodin family, no matter where you are, and no matter how you are connected to the large and growing family tree. Our request for help will be even more important as we try to answer many questions that we may not have easy answers at all.

Recently, we have connected with our extended Kudinsky family of Herschel, Miriam, Judah (Leib) and Raful descendants and inviting our “cousins” to take part in this process. Feiga did not emigrate, and little is known about her branch of the family.

If you want further information about how you can contribute to this project, you can contact us at:

clink@rogers.com

martinitzcan@gmail.com

Colleen Cohen and Martin Itzkow (2nd cousins)

Feb. 23, 2021

Our Nesanel and Rachel (Kudinsky) Coodin Family Reunion: The Creation Team February 23, 2021 This is our collective story of two 2nd cousins wanting to bring our other cousins together for a family reunion of a once very large and interconnected “Coodin” clan in North America.
