The emigrant generation of the Kudinsky family had six branches. Five of the branches – Herschel<\/a>, Miriam<\/a>, Leib<\/a>, Nesanel<\/a> and Raful<\/a> – made new lives in Canada. We know very little about the sixth branch – Feiga – and can only presume that she lived out her life in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A century has passed since the departure of the Kudinskys from their ancestral homes in Ukraine. Their last years in the Russian Empire were fraught with persecution and peril. Jewish lives were extinguished when pogroms descended on their communities with the tacit support of the authorities. Even when violence was not overt, anti-semitism was manifested in laws that limited the mobility of Jews, denied property rights, prescribed quotas on admissions to high school and university, and levied burdensome taxes. Each shtetl was compelled to serve up a quota of its young men for conscription into the Imperial Army. The First World War and the Revolution wreaked unimaginable havoc. And when the Bolsheviks emerged victorious from this chaos, Stalin\u2019s rule led to mass starvation in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were thus ample reasons for the Kudinskys to strike out for the port cities on the edges of Europe, clamber onto steamships, descend into steerage class, and put an ocean between themselves and their tsouris. We have prepared Emigration Charts which set out the details of the journeys of each branch of the family. In some cases we have included the specific reasons for their emigration. Where the reasons are not known, we can only imagine that our forebearers had some level of awareness that the events they were living through foreshadowed the annihilation of European Jewry that was to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
