What was their journey? Ship and arrival port?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><u>Louis Coodin<\/u><br>Herschel and Elka&nbsp;Kudinsky\u2019s eldest son Leib was the first Kudinsky to arrive in Winnipeg. Leib became \u201cLouis\u201d on his journey and, in shortening his surname, became the first Coodin.<br><\/td><td>Louis was serving in the Russian Imperial Army in Poland in 1908 when he deserted with his father\u2019s help. He arrived in Canada in November 1908.<br><br><\/td><td>Louis was conscripted into the Russian army. His father had contrived to delay this for about a year, but Louis finally had to begin serving in 1908. Louis deserted the Russian army and fled the country. He chose to emigrate to Winnipeg because he knew a family there.<\/td><td>After Louis deserted from the army, an agent helped him escape from Poland. He then spent 3 months in London before sailing from Liverpool on the SS Victorian. He disembarked in Halifax.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"120\" class=\"wp-image-155\" style=\"width: 200px;\" src=\"https:\/\/kudinsky.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/victorian.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><u>Chaykeh Coodin<\/u><br>Chaykeh was about 18 years old when she travelled by herself to join her brother Louis in Winnipeg.<br><br><br><br><br><br><\/td><td>Chaykeh arrived in Canada in August, 1912.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><\/td><td>Chaykeh listed her occupation on the ship manifest as \u201ctailoress,\u201d and went to work as a seamstress in a garment factory shortly after arriving in Winnipeg.<br><br><br><br><\/td><td>Chaykeh made her way from Pohrebyshche to Liverpool. She boarded the SS Megantic on August 17, 1912 and reached Canada at Quebec City on August 24, 1912.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" class=\"wp-image-1344\" style=\"width: 200px;\" src=\"https:\/\/kudinsky.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SS-Megantic.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kudinsky.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SS-Megantic.jpg 463w, https:\/\/kudinsky.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SS-Megantic-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/> <br><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><u>Herschel &amp; Elka Coodin and children Pesach and Bertha<\/u><br>Herschel and Elka made the journey to Canada with their 2 youngest children, Pesach and Bertha.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><\/td><td><br><br>The family arrived in Canada in September 1913.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><\/td><td>The family emigrated because of the oppression of Jews by Russian government. Herschel couldn\u2019t tolerate the restrictions on Jews. He sold his grain milling business and his home before leaving.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><\/td><td>In 1913, the family travelled from their village of Pohrebyshche to Libau, Lithuania. Then they took a ship to Liverpool and a train to Glasgow. They sailed on the SS Cassandra, departing Glasgow on August 23 and arriving in Quebec City on September 1, 1913.
