In 1908 Louis Coodin became the first in the family to settle in Winnipeg. A story has been handed down that explains how he chose Winnipeg as his destination. We are told that Louis met his future wife, Rose Simkin on the ship that carried them across the Atlantic. Louis was drawn to Winnipeg when Rose told him that she was going there to join her family. But the story is untrue. Louis and Rose didn’t sail on the same ship. Louis is listed on the ship manifest for the voyage of the SS Victorian in November, 1908. Rose is not. When Louis boarded the ship, he already knew where he was going. The manifest lists Winnipeg as his destination. Nevertheless, this fable is a lovely piece of Coodin family lore. Sometimes we need not let facts get in the way of a captivating story.
